A Birds-eye view

We decided to take a helicopter ride to get a birds eye view of the volcano but we first took a 2 hour drive to Hilo to get a better rate. The kids really did great {Terry & I felt a little sick by the end} and really enjoyed the view and asked some really great questions of our pilot.

We saw some beautiful waterfalls before heading to the volcano
The coast line is volcanic rock
these three vents spew steam all day long
along with the cone of the volcano
a ways down for the cone we could see red hot lava under the ground in a lava tube finding it's way to the ocean.
This is the only house left in a subdivision of over 80 homes. He refuses to leave even though the lava flow destroyed all but his home. The road to his house is gone and the only way in and out is a 2 hour hike to the road where someone takes him to get supplies. He says he is not leaving and has planted tea leaves all around his house for good fortune. So far, so good. There has been no new lava flow near his house.
