Yeah Sarah!

The kid's school has a school wide speech arts competition every year where all the kids memorize a poem in one of three categories {humorous, serious, religious}. They choose two kids from each category to compete in front of the whole school and this year Sarah choose a religious poem to recite. She had mixed feelings on weather or not she really wanted to be chosen to say in front of the whole school but decided she wanted to give it her best shot. Today was the classroom competition and she was chosen to move on the the school wide composition. I am so proud of her for memorizing this poem and giving it her best! Way to go Sarah!

Here is her poem {from Poems and Prayers for Children}

God bless the field and bless the lane,
Stream and branch and lion's mane,
Hill and stone and flower and tree,
From every end of my country-
Bless the sun and bless the sleet,
Bless the road and bless the street,
Bless the night and bless the day,
In each and every tiny way;
Bless the minnow, bless the whale,
Bless the rainbow and the hail,
Bless the nest and bless the leaf,
Bless the righteous and the thief,
Bless the wing and bless the fin,
Bless the air I travel in,
Bless the mill and bless the mouse,
Bless the miller's bricken house,
Bless the earth and bless the sea,
God bless you and God bless me.

Ian had his classroom competition on Thursday and unfortunately he wasn't chosen this year. He has been chosen twice before {Kindergarten- Spaghetti, Spaghetti All Over the Placee and 2nd grade - Bugs, Bugs, Bugs}. Ian always chooses to compete in the humorous category which usually has more kids competing and can be harder to move on from but today as in the past when he hasn't made it he was fine "I didn't make it Mom, but I'm OK". I am proud of both of the kids for working so hard to memorize their poems.

Ian's poem this year was The Sad Story of Tommy McTivver by Kenn Nesbitt

Sit back and I'll tell you of Tommy McTiver,
whose parents so cruelly made him eat liver.
I'll try to explain in a sensitive way
why Tommy McTivver is not here today.

You, see, when you serve up that rubbery meat,
it smells like the sweatsocks of stinky old feet.
The room becomes filled with the hideous order
of all the manure in the state of Dakota.

Poor Tommy was given a plateful of liver,
which frightened the dog and which made the cat shiver.
But nevertheless Tommy did what was right;
he cut a big piece, and chewed up a bite.

Then what happened next is too horrid to tell;
his body went stiff, and he shrieked as he fell.
The ambulance came, and they drove him away
and promised to have him returned in a day.

The driver, however, drove right off the street
when he heard what Tommy had happened to eat.
The man accidentally drove into the river
and all because Tommy McTivver ate liver.

So everyone died, and I'm sorry to say,
this story could happen again here today.
So please, Mom and Dad, think of Tommy McTiver
and don't make me eat one more bite of this liver.
