Passports - What a headache

FINALLY! What an ordeal! We are going to Mexico for Spring break (the end of March) and we all now need passports to go. So I downloaded the forms (after MUCH searching) that I needed to fill out. Not only did I need the form to apply for a passport I needed a form that Terry needed to fill out and get notarized because he was not going to be there when I got the passports (so one parent can't get passports for kids and take them out of the country without the permission of the other parent). He took the forms to work and got that done. I filled out the paperwork but couldn't find the kids birth certificates so to save time headed downtown to pick them up in person. Once I managed to get through the process and I needed to pay I noticed a sign on the window saying that they did NOT take credit cards. Wouldn't you know it, I didn't have a check book or enough cash. The person behind the window told me they had a cash machine in the lobby so off I went to get cash - $20 per birth certificate. Once I was done there I thought since I didn't have kids with me I would go and get the passports so I drove out to Oregon City. When I got in the office there was a sign that said no credit cards (you would think I would of thought of that) UGH! The guy behind the counter told me I could go to a bank and get a check written and as I was walking out the door he asked (thank goodness he asked) "Your children are in the car, right?" Turns out that you need to apply IN PERSON for your passport no matter your age. Another UGH! So the next time the kids had time off from school was this week (for conferences) and I decided to finish what I had started. So, I make it to the Lake Oswego city hall and walk in with all my paperwork and I am feeling like I have everything in order when she asks for a check (can I say UGH one more time). Once again no check book with me so off to the bank I go and get three individual checks, one for each passport and then head back to the city hall. I unload the kids for the third time all the while trying to keep them from irritating each other (and me) and go pay for the passports. After she takes the checks she asks for a processing fee of $90 which I CAN pay with a credit card - only one small problem - I CAN'T FIND MY CREDIT CARD! I haven't seen it since the Hanna Montana concert and they don't take American Express or Debit cards (UGH! again!!!) Thank goodness the bank teller asked me as I was getting the checks if I wanted any cash and on a whim I took $100 (finally something is working in my favor) Whew! I got it done! Now I just need to mail in mine.
We decided to go to the movies (The Bee Movie, it was just OK) and while at Bridgeport I just had to go to the Apple Store (my candy store) and pick up a copy of Leopard (the new operating system) and when I went to pay (luckily they took American Express) they asked for my drivers licence. Low and behold - it is missing! UGH! UGH! I have no idea where the heck it is. I had it at the passport place the first time she asked for it, I had it at the bank when the teller asked for it, and I had it again when the passport place asked for it again but after that - well, it is gone. I have either left it at the city building (which is now closed for the weekend) of have lost it in my purse (very possible but I have looked and looked) Oh well, when all is said and done in March we are off to Mexico!

This was VERY helpful, as I have just completed our forms but have been putting it off FOREVER.

The nice lady behind the counter warned me that not only did I need to bring the kids IN PERSON -- but Bill needed to come with me or I needed a bloody signed affidavit that he'd let me kids leave the country.

Who are they kidding -- Bill would PAY me to take the kids out of the country for a few weeks -- so that he could have more 'guy time!' Clearly the person who made up that rule is NOT married, with kids :)
