I was one of the drivers for Ian's 4th grade class field trip to Astoria. I had Donny and Jackson in the car along with Ian. We met at the school at 7 am and took off around 7:15 - we had a long busy day ahead of us.
The 4th grade class

Our first stop was Ft. Clatsop visitor center. Ft. Clatsop is the where the Corps of discovery camped through the winter December 1805 to March 1806. It was a tough winter for them. Sargeant Patrick Gass wrote that of the 106 days they were at Fort Clatsop it rained all but 12, and of the 12 dry days, only 6 were sunny.
At the visitors center the kids were able to dress up and they had a paper that they searched to museum to find the answers.
from there we went on a trail walk where the kids had another paper that gave them a list of "things" to find.
where the kids got to learn about items that came in the area by ship and then were traded and about navigation and about some wrecks on the very dangerous Columbia River.
They also got to go on board the boat and look around.
but were unable to go inside the tower as it was closed and they were replacing the stairs {we knew in advance} but the kids each bought an airplane and flew it down the hill behind the tower.
We then made a stop for pizza and headed out for the two hour trip home. I dropped my last passenger off at about 7:45 pm so it was a very long, exhausting, fun, & interesting day. I would do it again when Sarah is in the 4th grade. The boys in my car were son nice and courteous and a few days later gave me a hand made thank you card.
