I was one of the drivers to take Sarah's 2nd grade class on a field trip to Franz Bakery. It was quite an interesting and fun trip. They dived the class into two groups and while the first half went on their tour we stayed behind and ate some bread and butter and ground wheat and played games and colored pictures.
When it was our turn to take the tour we donned our red hair nets and off we went. It was soooo interesting and we learned many interesting facts. For instance, Franz makes about 90% of the fast food buns in the Northwest and they also make a lot of the bread out there including a lot of the Costco bread and buns. We also learned that they make 1000 buns a day and that they work 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The equipment shuts down every two hours to be cleaned and sanitized.
One of our favourite parts was the Bun Highway. After the buns are cooked the come out of the oven and onto the Bun Highway where they ride above the bakery all over the plant. The ride takes about 20 minutes - the perfect amount of time to cool off, and then they head to the packaging area.
It was such a fun and informative field trip that I plan on offering to drive when Emily is in 2nd grade. I would have loved to take photos of the process but cameras are not allowed on the plant floor - bummer :(
