Family History

I finally made the time to do the deed - the dreaded colonoscopy.

You see, I have quite the family history of colon cancer so although I am only 42 it was necessary for me to have a colonscopy. In fact, I should have had it around the time I turned 40. My father died from it at the very young age of 51, my maternal grandmother died from it in her early 70's and my mom was diagnosed with it in her early 60's. All of that was in the back of my head and I knew that I needed to make the appointment and had been meaning to make the appointment, it just took me two years to do it. Once the appointment was made I actually had to change it 3 times for one reason or another.
When the dreaded day before came I had to stop eating solid food {including my coffee, however I forgot that morning and drank it without thinking} but I could drink light colored drinks and eat jello {so long as it wasn't colored red}.  At 6 pm I filled the jug with watter and started drinking 8 ounces every 20 minutes for the first hour and then stepped it up to 8 ounces every 10 minutes. I truly think that drinking that jug of fluid was the worst part to the whole thing. I ended up getting fluid overload towards the end and the thought of drinking one more drop made me feel sick to my stomach. I made it thought the night, although not far from the bathroom and my mom took me to the office bright and early the next morning. The procedure didn't take very long and although I remember talking to the Dr. during the procedure I don't remember anything else. I found out right after the procedure {when I was more lucid} that everything looked good. Not a single thing to be worried about and I don't need to do it again for five years. I am glad to have it done and to know that I don't need to worry about it for awhile. I am hoping to break the cycle of family history with me.
