A musician in the making - grateful week 31

This week I am grateful for being able to "fix" a mistake.
At the end of the school year last year Ian brought home a letter about joining the OLL band saying that he "really" wanted to join playing either the guitar or the drums. I told Terry that Ian wanted to join but considering that the band practiced at 7:30 in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays I really didn't know if I could pull it off. Terry said he could help drive him so we let him sign up. On the first day of school when I walked through the registration {filling out all kinds of paperwork and paying for oh, so many extras - like tuition isn't enough} Mr. McCarthy was there for the band sign ups so even though I signed him up in the spring I filled out the paperwork again and this time instead of writing just guitar and drums I added piano {because he is already taking piano lessons and can play a little}. Little did I know that writing down piano would upset Ian. Turns out that Mr. McCarthy made Ian play keyboard and when Ian said I that he had requested guitar or drums he was told he had to play keyboard or a horn. When I saw Ian he was super depressed about it. I even broke my rule of finishing what you start and told him he could quit if he wanted to. He wanted to be a part of the band so bad that he said he had to think about it. Did he really want to commit that extra time to an instrument he didn't really want to play. I felt horrible! If only I hadn't written down piano. UGH! Always trying to do the best thing for my kids but it doesn't always turn out that way. On my way out of the school {looking to the music teacher to no avail} I ran into the principal and after telling her my {Ian's} sad story she said she would talk to the teacher {I guess it dose pay to be involved in the auction at school}. When I finally got to talk to Mr. McCarthy I told him what a commitment it was for us to get to school so early and that I wanted Ian to play an instrument that he was interested in and would make it worth the commitment. He recommended the base guitar and when I asked Ian what he thought he was all over it. On stop at Lake Music store and said guitar and amp was rented {with an option to buy}. Ian has had one band practice with the guitar and has begun learning the F key and bonus for Terry and Ian on top of it all - they get to spend two mornings a week together in the car chatting or just being.
