I was a driver for Ian's Class field trip today. They had a city tour of the downtown area and it was a very informative trip. I learned some interesting facts about Portland that I never knew and it was fun to watch the kids in our group get excited about the fun stuff we were learning. This was the first time I have driven on a field trip {I have always had little kids} and I look forward to volunteering to do more in the future. We had a great docent {our guide} who filled my head with information here are some of the interesting things I remember.
Our tour consisted of:
- Battleship Oregon
- Willamette River {we learned by throwing sticks that it flows to the Columbia River}
- Coin toss {it's how Lovejoy & Pettygrove decided it Portland would be called Boston or Portland.
- Fire Station Museum
- Skidmore Fountain {they paid kids to oil the streets so they could skid the timber down the roads to the river}.
- Oregon Legacy Center
- Japanese memorial Plaza
- Chinese Garden
- Port of Portland
Another interesting fact: Portland was called "stump town" because there were more stumps {from cut timber} than there were people at the time.
